By: Ally White
AC Milan defeated Bari 2-0 this past Sunday in the twenty-fifth round of the Italian League. The team shortened its distance from second place AS Roma, 2 points away, and first place Internazionale, 7 points away. Milan, which has accumulated four games without defeat, now has 48 points and remains in third place of the standings, while Bari, with 32 points, is in 11th place.

From the kickoff the Rossoneri came out with the motivation to keep them at the top of the standings. One of the first plays came at minute 14 when captain Massimo Ambrosini tried to surprise Bari with a left-footed shot from outside. The ball went wide and rapped on the left post, nevertheless sending a strong warning.

As the minutes passed, the ball remained in the control of the visitors. The Brazilian Alexandre Pato frightened his rivals with a strong shot, while Borriello missed a close header as well. It wasn’t until half an hour had passed that Bari woke up and brought some character in the field. Honduran Edgar Alvarez, with a pass from Massimo Donati, sent an accurate left shot that nonetheless failed to score.

Finally, before halftime, the score opened. Borriello showed some power off a pass from Ronaldinho and, practically alone in the center of the area, finished the play with a left shot that beat Belgian goalkeeper Jean Francois Gillet. The score was now 1-0 in favor of AC Milan.

The second half saw a slightly different situation. The host team began to hold the ball a little. At minute 52 the creative Massimo Donati fired right from outside the area after being assisted by the Argentinian Emmanuel Rivas, but failed to score.

But the team led by Brazilian Leonardo continued to control the pace of the game, and at minute 69, Pato sealed the score after carrying the ball from a shot by Ronaldinho, putting the scoreboard at 2-0.

After the goal, the Rossoneri completely dominated the ball. Bari was desperate to score and, in fact, came close after a penalty kick, but AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati managed to detain the ball at minute 88. The last play ended the game with the victory for the Rossoneri, 2-0.

With this triumph, Milan Coach Leonardo stated he was really pleased with the way his players carried out their tactics and their unification and cooperation on the field.

“We need this spirit to obtain great results like we have this evening. We were fantastic from a tactical point of view, and the team is over the moon about this. It was a complete performance by Milan. The important thing is that we defeated Bari this evening. I want to go as far as I can with this side, as they demonstrate something new every day. The team is very united, and wants to do their best,” said Leonardo.

AC Milan striker, Alexandre Pato, agreed, saying that the win against Bari showed how united the team was at the moment.

“The Scudetto? We are only thinking about ourselves and our work. We are all united at this time, and want to win, and only win,” Pato said.

AC Milan’s next match will be against Fiorentina on February 24th at Artemio Franchi whereas Bari will face Catania on February 27th as visitors.

By: ryan morrison
Is it possible that in the not so distant future the Scottish national team could consist entirely of players born outside of the country?

The chief executive of the Scottish Football Association Gordon Smith had been lobbying FIFA to utilise the new eligibility rule, agreed by the home nations, allows a player who was born in one country but spends at least five years of his education in another country to opt to be eligible for the latter.

With new manager Craig Levein compiling a definitive dossier of every player who may be eligible and stating he will be contacting every agent in the United Kingdom in a bid to assess who could be a future star for the country.

Feruz, 15, came to Glasgow seven years ago with his mother and two younger sisters, seeking asylum because of violence between rival warlords. On 13 October 2009, Islam Feruz became the first player to use the new FIFA rule that meant despite being born in Somalia he could play for the Scotland Football team as he had been schooled in Scotland for the required five years.

While only 13 in 2008 he made his debut for Celtic under 19s and just under a year later he made his first team debut in the Tommy Burns Tribute Match. International honours soon followed and on 20 October 2009 Feruz made his international debut for Scotland’s national under-17 football team against Cyprus U17s.

Feruz has been described as the best player of his generation by his youth coaches at Celtic and Scotland and he says “I have been very proud to live in Scotland. It’s a great country which is now my home and I will be proud to wear the Scotland jersey,”

By: Gerry McDonnell
It may appear unfair to a cynical minority, but nepotism remains as common as Coleen McLoughlin. I certainly have my father to thank for my first job – he was a kerb-crawler.

Dimitar Berbatov also has his father to thank for his career. His Dad instilled a passion for team sports.

Terry Venables has tried to make Berbatov a scapegoat in the current crisis engulfing Tottenham. Personally, I can only point the finger at Levy and Comolli; they’ve left Ramos with the most useless pair up front since Kylie Minogue.

Venables still has friends amongst certain sections of the press, but I would trust him about as far as I could throw Frank Lampard. If Tel told me it was raining, I’d have to look out of the window before letting the bint back in the house.

One United player who does deserve criticism is Ronaldo. The Portuguese ladyboy earned another contentious penalty last week after collapsing like Judy Finnegan’s breasts.

Rob Styles definitely erred when he apologised to Bolton for his decision to award United an advantageous penalty. There’s now a mountain of correspondence for Mike Riley to catch up on.

I do agree with the decision not to punish Styles for his controversial clampdown on the fair tackle. Demotions should only be considered if a referee sends off John Terry.

The standard of officiating is at such a woeful level; referees will even award a phantom goal when the ball doesn’t go between the two posts. It is difficult to comprehend, but it does explain Robbie Keane’s fifteen goal tally last season.

It’s now reached the stage where games should only be refereed by ex-footballers, although that does discriminate against Robbie Savage.

There’s only one thing I dislike in life more than Savage, and that’s drink-driving. Whenever I’m behind the wheel, I top up my alcohol level intravenously.

I don’t want to preach to Carlton Cole, but you should never take the wheel while intoxicated – unless it’s a relatively short journey.

Steven Pienarr has also found himself in trouble with the filth this week when he was arrested for an assault on a woman. Whenever he finishes his football career i’ve got a few odd jobs for him.

There was better news for Pienarr when it was revealed that Everton have been targeted by the sixth richest man in the world. This may well lead to a conflict of interests for Rio Ferdinand.

Rio should invest some of his considerable wealth on Tottenham to beat the massively overachieving Hull by two or more goals at 3.30. Tottenham may be as impotent as Melanie Chisholm’s boyfriend when sobriety arrives, but if they can’t ease past Hull in front of their own supporters they should rename the ground ‘White Flag Lane’.

You simply have to join me in staking one point on this incredible investment opportunity. I’m going to have to behave like Dimitar Berbatov’s Dad on this one – I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

By: David Walker
Outright Odds: 40/1 Group D Winners: 13/8

As per usual, Mexico, ranked in the World’s top 10, had an impossibly easy qualifying path to the finals in Germany. After hammering Dominica 18-0 across two legs, they won all six matches in Stage Two of qualifying in a group which contained fellow qualifiers Trinidad & Tobago and football heavyweights St Vincent / Grenadines and St Kitts and Nevis.

The final group saw them lose two matches, away to the United States to whom they finished the group as runners up on goal difference and their final match at Trinidad & Tobago. They did however, net 22 goals in the process, making them the group’s top goal scorers overall.

Those two defeats within 90 minutes were the first endured under manager Ricardo La Volpe since he took over in October 2003, with his side beating Brazil 1-0 in the Confederations Cup and also taking both Germany and Argentina into extra time. No matter how easy a passage into the finals Mexico may have had, there is no denying they can mix it with the “big boys” when the occasion arises.

They have appeared in 12 World Cups and reached the quarter final stages in both 1970 and 1986 when the tournament was held on home soil. However, they haven’t faired so well in recent finals, suffering a 2-0 second round defeat by rivals the United States in 2002 and bowing out 2-1 at the same stage to Germany in 1998.

Following a not-too-taxing qualifying process, they will be delighted at being seeded and being placed in arguably the weakest group of the tournament. They should have no problem qualifying for the second round and Lavolpe’s coveted 3-5-2 formation should serve him well in the opening stage.

The formation is used to benefit striker Jared Borgetti, who plundered 14 goals through the qualifying campaign while Jaime Lorenzo struck 11 times from midfield. However, ironically what used to be the team’s main strength could now be a major weakness. Borgetti has flopped at Bolton Wanderers and is just a bit-part player while fiery striker Cuahtemoc Blanco may not even feature in the finals squad.

Where Mexico do boast a genuine world-class player is holding player Rafael Marquez, who plays just in front of the defence for both club – Catalan giants Barcelona and his country. Goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez is in the form of his life too so while Mexico may not be the force in attack they used to be, they will certainly be a tough nut to crack.

Recommended Bet: Being seeded in such a weak group means there is no value in backing Mexico to qualify for the second round. They don’t play fellow seeds Portugal until the final round of fixtures and if both sides have already made it to the last 16 by then, a draw could be on the cards. Portugal vs Mexico draw @ 5/2
