Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are always in demand in and around Norman, but the 2006 season carried expectations as low as any season in recent history. The Sooners suffered one crushing loss before the season began, and suffered two more once the season started. However, the Sooners are once again in a BCS bowl game, and almost no one expected this. It’s a credit to the coaching ability of Bob Stoops, and other factors are also responsible for this surprisingly successful season. We’ll examine the reasons for this great season below, and Sooner nation will once again be out in full force in January.

Obstacles Presented

The Sooners seemed to be destined for a disappointing season even before fall practice got into full swing. QB Rhett Bomar, a returning starter and a player many expected to be among the nation’s elite, was kicked off the team after it was discovered that he accepted money for what amounted to a “no-show” job, as it was alleged. Not only did the Sooners apparently lack depth at the position, but given the timing of this potential disaster, the team was basically put in a very difficult position on offense.

Two other serious problems arose during the season. The first was a highly-controversial loss to Oregon, which occurred when officials basically botched a late-game call that all-but handed the Ducks a victory. The Sooners play a challenging non-conference schedule with regularity, and this loss angered everyone from the coach to the president of the university, and it was quietly acknowledged by

many that the Sooners had been robbed in that game.

Finally, the Sooners’ superstar, RB Adrian Peterson, was lost to injury when he broke his collarbone diving into the end zone after another of his patented scintillating runs. Peterson was the most feared offensive player in the Big 12, and perhaps the country, and most teams simply don’t overcome a loss like that and continue to win. Although Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are always hard to find, Peterson by himself was the reason many fans came out to see Oklahoma play.

Perseverance

As a credit to the program, each of these obstacles was met and handled with aplomb. New QB Paul Thompson, who had been expected to play WR this season, grew into his new position with what appears to be excellent coaching. Thompson has thrown for almost 2,500 yards and 20 TD’s, and finished the regular season with a QB rating of 144.56. If that isn’t great coaching, then there’s no such thing.

The Sooners also refused to fold after the Oregon debacle, even though they did suffer a tough loss to Texas two weeks later, and were sitting with a mediocre 3-2 record as of October 8. Many teams would simply fold at that point, but all Oklahoma has done since is run the table, including wins over three ranked teams and a Big 12 title. Again, credit needs to go to the coaching staff for this continued focus.

Finally, the loss of Peterson did not ruin the season. New starter Allen Patrick has racked up 700 yards in only about half a season, and he has kept the running game at Oklahoma churning. Included in his body of work are games where he rushed for 173 yards at Texas A&M and 163 yards at Oklahoma State. The result is teams still have to fear Oklahoma’s running game.

Results

The results speak for themselves. Oklahoma finds itself once again in a BCS bowl game with an 11-2 record, and a date with undefeated Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. This is perhaps Stoops’ best coaching job, and Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are going to be impossible to find for yet another big-time bowl game.

The most important thing a modern football player as an individual, and players as a team, should know are the men they are to play against each week.

Every player should know well the techniques and habits of the fellow across the line from him before the game starts. Coaches give you detailed scouting reports of the various opponents and show you movies of different games. This is very good. But, for a player to be really effective instead of just average, he should look at game films before practice and at home all during the week on his own time. So you have to buy a projector! But you also become a better player who takes in more at the payroll window!

Although the coaches can tell you all about your opponents, remember that the coaches do not have to play against them. Once the game starts, it’s just you and the other fellow, just as it is in the prize ring. If you are not prepared, it can be a long, hard afternoon. And a losing one, too.

QUARTERBACK’S CHECKLIST FOR A GAME

As the opponent changes each week, so must the quarterback’s thinking in terms of personnel. In reality, the offense is trying to beat personnel, and not so much the defense which, after all, is manned by personnel. The quarterback must know the individual characteristics of his opponents, as well as their tendencies when working as a unit. Some of the problems that the quarterback must face up to each week are set forth in the following .

1.	Who calls the defensive signals? Check the files for a historical report on this individual’s t

endencies.

2.	Who is their best pass rusher? Does he rush hard on every play, or merely when the defense signal calls for it?

3.	Who is the passive type of rusher? Is he passive because of the defensive calls, or because of his own characteristics?

4.	Is one of the defensive linemen very aggressive? Or are all of them aggressive. Conversely, is one of the defensive linemen of the passive type?

5.	Can any of the defensive linemen be trapped? Which one? Which two, or three, or even four?

6.	Does the defense “read” offensive linemen, or does it charge on a predetermined call?

7.	What defensive end is hardest to run outside of? Does he square off? Does he pinch? Does he float? Can we run inside of him? What end can we screen? And on what down?

8.	Do the defensive linemen use their hands effectively? Are they catchers or throwers?

9.	Do any of their linemen rise up to charge?

10.	Which linemen have the good lateral pursuit? Which do not move well laterally?

11.	Do they hold up ends well, or poorly? What types of players are the defensive secondary? Who are the fast boys? Slow boys? Which one comes up the fastest? Slowest? Which back or backs can be beaten on the long pass? Who are strong against the long pass? Do the corner backs react swiftly to a quick pass in the flat? Slow? Who can we work on best on the third down to sustain a drive? Which back, if any, lies back and plays cautious? Which one has a history of making mental errors? Are there any backs who like to gamble on interceptions in an attempt to make the headlines? Who?

12.	.Who are their best tacklers in the secondary? The weakest?

13.	Is there one defender who is so good that we should avoid throwing in his area? Pick him, or them, out and keep them firmly in mind.

14. Who are the leaders on defense? Which individual seems to inspire the others?

15.	What player or players discourage easily when his team falls behind?

The foregoing considerations are phases of the game that must be worked on each day of the football season.

After the club came into existence in 1892 wearing a blue and white halved shirt. The kit was made to make some distinction between themselves and Everton who were playing in various strips including Salmon Pink or Ruby Red. Just inside the 1900s the two clubs switched to their more commonly known kits. Everton returned to their original colours of blue and white whilst Liverpool switched to a red kit.

In the early 1900s the reds turned out in all red shirts with long white shorts and red socks. There were a couple of variations in the early years towards more white featuring in the top but this never lasted for any length of time.

After the first World War the reds were seen in red tops with white shorts and black socks. Though just before the war they changed their kit whereby a red stripe was put on the shorts and the socks were rimmed in red and white. Just before Bill Shankly’s days at Anfield the socks were more white but the top remained red and the stripe on the shorts remained.

It was during Bill Shankly’s days though that the kit of today was born. He decided that the players would look even bigger and more importantly more intimidating to the opposition if the players changed their shorts to all red ones. At this point he threw a pair of all red shorts at the Collosus – Ron Yeats and told him to put them on. As soon as he put them on he said straight away how he looked eight feet tall and players would be scared of him. At this point Ian St John suggested that he go all the way and give him red socks as well

. The comment was met with open arms by the great man and the all red kit was born.

In 1965 the reds played the FA Cup Final in their all red kit and for the first time in their history picked up the FA Cup. They then embarked on their show of steel for years to come and became hugely successful with it. In the 1970s Umbro designed an excellent kit off all red with a little white v-neck collar and small white cuffs. A golden liver bird with the initials LFC were placed over the heart. It’s this strip that the reds won their first European cup in Rome 1977. The away kits of the time where the reverse scenario of white shirts and red v-neck collar. For the occasions of playing teams like Sunderland the team would play in all yellow.

It was this home shirt which saw the very first sponsorship deal placed on it when Hitachi started sponsoring the team in 1977. The kit didn’t really start changing until the early 80′s though when the first of the now regular changes happened. A white pinstripe was introduced by Umbro ready for the last of the European cup wins in Rome 1984. By this time the sponsorship had changed over to Crown Paints and had become more commonplace from the original days of only been worn if the teams were not being featured on TV. In the same period of time the away kit had become all yellow as occasionally worn earlier in the 1970s. The alterations had to come against Watford when the team combined three kits together with a red top, black shorts and yellow socks.

At the start of the 1985-86 season the club changed their kit manufacturer to Adidas whilst retaining the Crown Paints sponsorship. The kit was changed back to more red in the kit at this point and remained for a couple of years. In 1985-86 the reds wore all white when traveling away from home. By 1988 the kit was altered to a round necked collar. The away kit for this season became all silver with red trim and despite the recent whinges from Man United the team found each other very easily. This kit was changed a year later with the change of sponsor from Crown Paints to Candy. The sponsorship of Candy didn’t last too many years and was altered to Carlsberg. However before the kit changed sponsor Adidas made what is often known as the bird droppings kit when they introduces flashes of white all over the top. They introduced a variation of the silver kit as well when they introduced one which was silver and white mini diamonds. Around the time of the clubs centenary Adidas made the kit all red again but introduced three flashes across the right shoulder. This remained past the centenary year and into the Carlsberg sponsorship. The year before the centenary the away kit also became green for the first time and in a similar way to the home kit it was all green with three white adidas flashes on the shoulder and shorts.

After the centenary year of 1992 the kit was changed again whereby the three stripes on one shoulder were moved to three stripes on either side of the shirt going diagonally upwards from the hips. The away kit of this time was white body with green sleeves and black flashes from each hip with black shorts. The final kit of the Adidas deal came when they tried to move back to kits of the past with a deep red kit and thick white collar with plan red shorts and socks. The away kit of the time was to become green and white quarters with a granddad type collar and green shorts. It was one of Adidas’ better away kits of the time. During this time the reds also had a third kit for odd games off gold with black badges through it all and looked awful.

Reebok then took over the kit manufacturing for the club until they merged with Adidas and the club returned to wearing Adidas kits. They started with an all red top and a white fold over collar before reverting to an older tradition top of all read with a rounded white collar like the 60s although much lighter in colour. Reebok also introduced a whole number of away kits since they took over and sadly introduced more and more blue into the away kits. The first away kit was Ecru in colour with black shorts but only lasted a year as first away kit when it was replaced with an all yellow kit and a tiny bit of blue. It was then replaced one year later with a white top and a red stripe down the sleeve but sadly navy shorts. This was in turn replaced a year on with a green kit and blue shorts. The top had a diagonal blue and white stripe.

Reebok continued to change the away kit year on year but then used the previous season’s away kit as a third shirt for a year. This brought the idea that a kit would last two seasons.

In the summer of 2006 the Reds reverted back to Adidas for kit manufacture and by this time they were in full swing for three kits. The third kit was now classed as a European kit which changed once a year and the away shirt followed suit too.

Metatarsal Fracture Explained

One of the most common injuries in the history of sports is the metatarsal fracture. This kind of injury has been very prevalent in football in the past 5 years. Several high- profiled footballers suffered from the same injury- David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, and Steve Gerrard. The anatomy of the foot will however help us understand this injury better and deeper.

Metatarsal bones are long and slender bones found in between the Tarsal bone and the Phalanges. There are 5 Metatarsal bones in each foot. These bones act like a rigid lever in the propulsion of the ankle and the foot. It also acts like a flexible structure that will help in balance and holding up the entire body.

Metatarsal fractures are caused by direct trauma, overuse and excessive rotation. Bone injuries like this are very common since there is a very little soft tissue that protects the top of the foot.

Four anatomic segments divide the fifth metatarsal. These are the base, the junction, the shaft, and the neck. Several fractures can be made out of these segments.

Fracture of the fifth metatarsal is the most common metatarsal injuries. This results from the twisting of the ankle. This kind of fracture doesn’t need to be surgically repaired. Walking immediately in a removable plastic cast is usually advised.

Metatarsal fractures can be caused by overuse. It is common in new army recruits and athletes. A stress fracture will eventually turn into full fracture when the pain in the groin region worsens. The stress fract

ure of the 2nd metatarsal heals well while the healing of the stress fracture of the 5th metatarsal can be a lot of problem.

How Do We Know Its Metatarsal Fracture?

A severe foot pain and difficulty to walk usually entails metatarsal fracture. Swelling may also be common and bruising will be evident after1-2 days.

How Do We Treat Metatarsal Fracture?

The patient should be headed directly to the emergency room for treatment if metatarsal fracture is suspected. The doctor will confirm the diagnosis with an X-ray. Ice therapy is a good help in dealing with pain and pain medications are necessary. The Aircast Ankle and Foot Cryo/ Cuff is the best way to give ice packs effectively by providing continuous compression for 6 hours.

The terminal treatment for this injury varies on the type and condition of the fracture. Alignment and treatment with an immobilization cast is greatly appreciated in fractures caused by direct trauma.

A removable plastic cast is used for stress fractures of the 2nd metatarsal and rotational fracture of the 5th metatarsal. However, many orthopedist advocates surgical repair of the fracture. This method will allow the patient to resume sports activities possibly after 6 weeks.

How Do We Prevent Metatarsal Fracture?

Very little thing can be done to this kind of injury especially when force is applied to the foot during a traumatic injury. Yet, it is very necessary to wear suitable footwear to provide protection to the foot.
